Emomali Rahmon (Persian: امامعلی رحمان; until March 21, 2007 — Rakhmonov Emomali Sharifovich; born October 5, 1952, in Danghara, Kulob Region, Tajik SSR, USSR) is a Tajik statesman and politician. He served as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Tajikistan from 1992 to 1994 and has been the President of the Republic of Tajikistan since 1994. Since December 25, 2015, he has also held the title Leader of the Nation.
Biography#
Emomali Rahmon was born on October 5, 1952, in the Danghara district of Tajikistan, into a peasant family. He is married and is the father of nine children.
Education#
In 1969, he graduated from Vocational Technical School No. 40 in the city of Kalininobod (now Sarband). In 1982, he graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Tajik National University.
Career#
He began his working career in 1969 as an electrician at the oil extraction plant in Qurghonteppa.
From 1971 to 1974, he served in the Pacific Fleet during his military service. After completing his service, he returned to his homeland and worked at the Lenin State Farm in Danghara district.
From 1976 to 1987, he held the positions of secretary of the management board and chairman of the trade union committee of the Lenin State Farm in Danghara district. He later worked in party bodies.
From 1987 to 1992, he was the director of the Lenin State Farm in Danghara district.
Political career#
In 1990, Emomali Rahmon was elected a People’s Deputy to the 12th convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Tajikistan. In the autumn of 1992, he was elected Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Council of People’s Deputies of Kulob Region.
On November 19, 1992, at the 16th session of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon was elected Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Tajikistan.
On November 6, 1994, he was elected President of the Republic of Tajikistan by nationwide popular vote.
On November 6, 1999, he was elected President for a second seven-year term on an alternative basis and by popular vote.
On November 6, 2006, he was elected President for a third seven-year term in free and transparent democratic elections held on an alternative basis.
On November 6, 2013, Emomali Rahmon won the next presidential election with 84.23 percent of the vote.
Personal life#
By religious affiliation, Emomali Rahmon is a Sunni Muslim of the Hanafi school. In 2007, by his decree, the Qur’an was translated into Tajik.
